The Best of DaVid of Scandinavia #1
I had never heard of DaVid of Scandinavia and have not watched this DVD. It covers various festival performances by DaVid from 2004 to 2006.
The two clips below give an indication of his style. At the risk of offending some male dancers, I have to say I don't particularly like it (which is why I chose not to buy this DVD).
I like my male belly dancers to convey masculinity and power, even when they're being graceful. At the beginning of the Balady clip below, when he's in shadow, you would never guess the performer isn't a woman.

I have to say that being invloved in this dance for many years, I look past gender restrictions to talent and ability.
David has both talent and ability to perform this dance style to the highest standard. A dancer is a dancer be they male or female.
The execution of music and movement is what is featured, not gender.
Patrisha, I find belly dance has a strong element of sensuality to it, so I simply can’t ignore the gender of the performer. A male dancer who dances like a man can bring a totally different dimension to belly dance. A male dancer who dances like a girl appears weak to me, no matter how good the technique. However that is only my personal reaction – you are naturally just as entitled to your opinion, and I appreciate you taking the time to post it.
